Amazon Sponsored Product campaigns are the main advertising format used by our customers when it comes to running Amazon PPC campaigns. As a rule, Sponsored Product campaigns account for around 60-85% of advertising costs and around 65-90% of advertising sales. As an Amazon advertising agency, we use both automated and manual campaigns in a targeted manner to achieve our clients‘ advertising goals. We also pay particular attention to the exact distribution of brand, generic and competition keywords so that the results achieved can also be assessed.

Sponsored Brand campaigns are of course a must in any Amazon marketing mix! We also place sponsored brand product collection ads as well as store spotlight ads and sponsored brand video ads. The versatile use of sponsored brand campaigns is often not fully exploited.

What Is Amazon PPC?

Amazon PPC (Pay-per-Click) refers to ad formats managed by Amazon where advertisers pay per click. These ads primarily appear on the Amazon platform. An alternative is Amazon DSP (Demand Side Platform), which uses CPM (cost per thousand impressions) billing.

There are currently three types of Amazon PPC campaigns available to both Seller Central and Vendor accounts:


Amazon PPC Campaign Types

1. Sponsored Product Campaigns
These are the most commonly used and highest-performing ad type on Amazon. Sponsored Product campaigns typically account for 50–80% of total ad spend and revenue due to their prominent placement on the platform.

There are two versions:

  • Automatic campaigns: Advertisers set the products, daily budget, and max CPC. Amazon handles targeting.

  • Manual campaigns: Advertisers define specific placements, bids, and keywords. These offer greater control and optimization options.

Best Practice: Structure campaigns based on keyword type—generic terms, branded terms, and competitor terms—to simplify performance analysis.


2. Sponsored Brand Campaigns
These focus on brand awareness and promoting the entire product range. Available only to vendors and brand-registered sellers. All Sponsored Brand campaigns are manually controlled.

Campaign types include:

  • Product Collection Ads: Feature brand logo, headline, and three products linking to detail pages or brand store.

  • Store Spotlight Ads: Highlight three brand store categories, always linking to the store.

  • Video Ads: Appear after the top organic results (4th desktop, 2nd mobile) and feature a product video linking to the detail page.

These campaigns can be targeted by keyword or product page and don’t require Buy Box ownership—unlike Sponsored Product campaigns.


3. Sponsored Display Campaigns
These are display-style ads showing either a product image, image with logo/headline, or a lifestyle shot. A registered brand is required, but Buy Box ownership is not.

Sponsored Display offers:

  • Product targeting

  • Audience targeting (e.g., retargeting visitors who didn’t purchase)

Optimization options:

  • Viewable impressions (CPM)

  • Page visits (CPC)

  • Conversions (CPC)

Best Practice: Optimize for conversions. These campaigns typically make up about 10% of ad spend. Audience and buyer retargeting are especially useful for complex or consumable products.
